Jeremy Carle went seven innings and struck out 11 batters, leading Stony Brook to a 9-5 win over Fairfield (0-4) Saturday afternoon at Winthrop University. The Seawolves dropped the nightcap, 12-6, to Winthrop (14-4-1).
Stony Brook built a 5-0 lead against the Stags, getting two unearned runs in the third, a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth before the Stags responded. Fairfield closed the gap to 5-2, but a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth put the game away. George Kearnes went 3-for-5 with three RBI in the win.
The Seawolves came out in the night cap and led 4-0 midway through on the strength of Matt Blumberg's RBI single and solo homerun. The wheels came off in the bottom of the fifth inning. Starter Jason Brock allowed five runs to score on two Fairfield hits and also walked two batters. Stony Brook tied it in the sixth as Matt Blumberg added his third RBI of the night on a sacrifice fly that scored Brad Foster.
The Eagles countered with two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and four in the eight against Stony Brook relievers Anthony Stutz, Graham Wildt and Paul LaMarr. The bullpen pitched three innings, gave up eight hits, seven earned runs and four walks. All told, the Seawolves walked 11 Eagles batters on the night.
Alex Trezza went 4-for-4 with three singles and a double while Blumber had three RBI, going 2-for-3 from the plate.
The Seawolves (3-3) finish their four-game South Carolina swing against Fairfield tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
