Junior pitcher Chris Flinn struck out 14 batters and allowed six hits as Stony Brook (10-9) downed Columbia (4-15), 9-2, in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Seawolves Field. In game two, Columbia scored nine runs in the first inning en route to a 14-8 victory.
Justin Berti ripped a one out solo homerun in the first inning off Flinn (2-2) to give his team the early advantage. In the third, Jimmy McCurdy singled to lead off the inning and scored when Trezza hit a two-run blast to right field to give the Seawolves the lead for good. Trezza helped the Stony Brook seven-run assault in the sixth inning when he singled home two more runs that built the advantage to 4-1. George Kearnes followed with one of his two homeruns on the day and the Pack was off and running.
Flinn went the distance, getting the first nine outs all on strikeouts.
In game two, the Lions got to Stony Brook starter Kevin Willi for nine runs on six hits, chasing him after just two outs in the first inning. Andrew Pisano's two-run homerun keyed the inning. Stony Brook put up four runs in the third inning on a two-run homerun by Trezza followed by a Kearnes solo shot that made the score 11-4. The Seawolves could not close the gap.
Freshman Jessen Grant went the distance in game two to get the victory. He went seven innings, allowing nine hits and five earned runs while striking out 10.
