Baseball Drops A Pair To Open the Season

Buies Creek, N.C. - Campbell scored 22 runs in sweeping a pair of baseball games in the Fighting Camel Classic on Friday at Taylor Field. The Camels defeated Stony Brook 14-3, then downed Akron 8-5 in the nightcap.

The Camels rapped 13 hits and capitalized on nine Stony Brook walks to defeat the Seawolves in the day's second contest. Camel starter Wes Hepler (3-0) scattered eight hits and allowed just one earned run in seven innings while walking just one and striking out six batters.

Tony Della Costa went 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBI to lead the Camels. Michael Wineke also collected three hits, while Nic Carter and Bradley Coates tallied two apiece.

Seawolves starter Christopher Flinn (0-1) allowed eight runs (six earned) on seven hits while issuing nine walks and striking out eight in 5 2/3 frames. George Kearnes had a pair of hits for Stony Brook (0-2), which is in its second year of competition on the NCAA Division I level.

In the nightcap, Nic Carter broke a 5-5 tie with a two-run triple in the seventh inning and stole his ninth base on the year to lead the Camels (7-4) in their 8-5 victory over Akron (2-2).

Shaun Poole (1-0) struck out six of the 10 batters he faced in three innings of one-hit, shutout relief to secure the victory for the Camels, who won their seventh-straight outing. ???? Edison Lee and Chris Wiley each had two hits for the Camels, who tallied 11 as a team.

Akron starter Justin Lucas (0-1) gave up eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits with five walks and four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

In the tripleheader's first game, Akron tallied 14 hits and drew 14 walks from Stony Brook pitching in a 14-3 victory. Tom Lindhe went 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBI for the Zips.

Akron starter Ben McCauley (1-0) gained the win by scattering six hits and allowing three runs and striking out five in six innings. Stony Brook starter Jeremy Carle (0-1) lasted just three innings and gave up eight runs (five earned) in three innings on six hits and six walks.

The Fighting Camel Classic concludes on Saturday when Akron faces Stony Brook at 10:00 a.m., followed by the host Camels taking on the Zips at approximately 1:00 p.m
