Box Score

New Haven, Conn. - The Seawolves softball team split with Yale on Sunday afternoon, earning a 5-3 win in eight innings in game one to snap a five-game losing streak. SBU fell to the Bulldogs in game two, losing 8-2.

Stony Brook (8-8) fell behind 2-0 in the first game, but staged a comeback in the sixth inning as the Seawolves scored three runs. SBU held onto the narrow 3-2 lead until Yale scored in the bottom of the seventh to knot the game at 3-3 and force extra innings. But the Seawolves responded in the eighth, as Tricia Lipareli drove in the game-winning run and Mary Shea Carpenter drove in another, and Stony Brook earned a 5-3 victory.

Carpenter led Stony Brook at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Stephanie Poetzsch earned the win, improving her record to 6-3. Poetzsch struck out nine batters and yielded just three hits.

Game two was a different story, as Yale raced to a 6-0 lead before the Seawolves countered with two runs in the sixth inning. But the Bulldogs added two more runs as they went on to win, 8-2, and improve to 10-12 on the year.

Lipareli and Carpenter again led Stony Brook, as each went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Lindsey DeLaRosa (2-5) picked up the loss on the mound.

Stony Brook returns to action on Tuesday, April 3, when the Seawolves host Fairfield in their home opener. The doubleheader begins at 2:30 p.m.
