Box Score

South Orange, NJ -- Seton Hall University (18-14) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning and held off an eighth inning rally to defeat Stony Brook (17-12), 6-4, Tuesday afternoon at Owen Carroll Field. It was the fifth straight win for the Pirates and was the second straight loss for Stony Brook.

The Pirates got to starting pitcher Chris Flinn (3-3) with a run in the first, four runs in the third and another in the fourth before Flinn was pulled from the game.

Dwayne Whitaker tripled home Garrett Renner and Alex Trezza in the sixth inning to get Stony Brook on the board. Renner's RBI single in the seventh brought home Ed Murillo, who led the inning off with a single.

In the meantime, Anthony Stutz came in and shut down the Pirates, allowing just two hits in 4 1/3 innings of relief and also struck out four.

The Seawovles struck for another run in the eighth inning on Ed Murillo's RBI single, closing the gap to 6-4. Stony Brook loaded the bases with one out with pinch-hitter RJ Etzel coming to the plate. Etzel ripped the first pitch up the middle, but pitcher Isaac Pavlik ranged to his left to catch the hot shot and doubled off Murillo at first to end the Stony Brook threat.

Renner went 3-for-4 on the day with two RBI and Dwayne Whitaker also had a pair of RBI.

The Seawolves head to Central Connecticut Saturday for a doubleheader staring at 12:00 p.m.
