Connecticut scored seven runs in the seventh inning - five unearned - to break a 4-4 tie and defeat Stony Brook (19-13), 11-5, Monday afternoon in Storrs, CT. It marked the first meeting between the two teams.
The Seawolves took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout by George Kearnes. Connecticut scored one run in the first, two in the third and another in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.
Stony Brook tied it in the seventh on RBI singles by Lee Lipschutz, Jimmy McCurdy and Garrett Renner to tie the game at 4-4.
In Connecticut's half of the seventh, they scored seven runs - five that came unearned to break the game open. Ryan Treat and Mike Leonard hit RBI singles off reliever Paul LaMarr as Connecticut took a 6-4 lead. With the bases loaded and two outs, Cy Hess hit a hard shot right at Stony Brook first baseman Mike Russo. The ball caromed off Russo's glove and into right field, allowing two runs to score. Brian Tisbert doubled home two more runs two batters later as the Huskies took control.
Renner went 4-for-5 from the plate with two RBI, extending his hitting streak to six games. He is now hitting .449 on the season.
LaMarr (0-1) was credited with the loss, his first decision of the season.
Chris Flinn went six innings, allowing four runs and seven hits. He struck out nine and walked two.
The Seawolves host Hofstra Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
