Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team (17-13) ended a streak of 15 straight losses in the Seawolves' series with Albany as SBU earned a 6-2 victory in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Seawolves Field. The Great Danes (16-14) posted a come-from-behind 3-2 win in game one.

In the fourth inning of game one, SBU's Corrine Vish crushed a triple to right field and leading hitter Tricia Lipareli followed with a double that drove in Vish and gave Stony Brook a 1-0 lead. The score stood until the sixth inning, when the Great Danes used two hits and an error to take a 2-1 advantage. Stacy Kowal's two-out single drove in Valerie Terry and an error in the outfield allowed pinch-runner Celine Adams to score as well. The Seawolves responded in the bottom of the inning, as Tory Menchise doubled to right field and Poetzsch followed with an RBI single. However, the Great Danes clinched the win in the final inning, when Terry's base hit drove in Nikki Carella for the 3-2 final.

Poetzsch (11-6) suffered her first defeat in four outings, yielding five hits and two earned runs while striking out 10. Albany's Sarah Maida, who entered the game in the sixth inning, earned the win, while Amy Hawk gave up four hits and one run and struck out six in five innings.

The Seawolves took control right away in game two, racing to a 4-0 lead after two innings. Lipareli's RBI double plated Vish in the first for the early lead. The Seawolves did most of their damage in the second inning, when Cass Broadwater earned an RBI double and Vish drove in two runs to extend the lead to 4-0. Albany staged a minor comeback with two runs in the third, but a two-run homer by Christie McMurray in the fourth put the game away.

Lindsey DeLaRosa (6-7) picked up her fourth straight victory on the mound, as she gave up six hits and struck out five. Offensively, it was Vish and McMurray leading the way for Stony Brook. Vish enjoyed a 2-for-3 outing with two RBI, and McMurray was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.

For the Seawolves, it was the first time they have beaten in-state rival Albany since a 6-5 win in 1994.

Stony Brook is back in action tomorrow afternoon at Seawolves Field when SBU plays host to Central Connecticut. The doubleheader begins at noon.
