Box Score
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook softball team (12-12) posted its first sweep in two seasons and first-year coach Megan Bryant set a new record for most wins in a debut season as the Seawolves beat Quinnipiac 2-1 in eight innings and 3-1 in the nightcap.
Quinnipiac (8-12) posted an early 1-0 lead when Nicole Chaput's sacrifice fly in the first inning sent Lauren Fries home. But SBU pitcher Stephanie Poetzsch put forth another tremendous effort on the mound, as the Seawolves held Quinnipiac scoreless the rest of the game. Cass Broadwater collected an RBI double in the fourth inning as Christie McMurray scored to even the game at 1-1. Stony Brook, which had earned just one win in its previous four extra-inning games, ended its three-game losing streak when Tory Menchise's shot to left field scored Corrine Vish for the winning run.
Poetzsch (9-5) added another milestone to her ever-growing resume, as she fanned 10 batters for a total of 127 this season, a new Stony Brook record. Poetzsch gave up just five hits and one unearned run on the afternoon.
Game two got off to a shaky start as the Seawolves committed three errors in the first two innings. However, the Braves were unable to capitalize on the miscues, and it was Stony Brook who posted an early lead. In the bottom of the first, Shea Carpenter blasted a double to left field that plated lead-off Jen Milito. Leah Nankin evened the score in the second when she advanced on a passed ball, but that would be the Braves' last tally of the day. The Seawolves responded in the third, when Trish Lipareli's RBI single drove in Milito. SBU added an insurance run in the sixth when Sam Foronjy advanced on a Quinnipiac error, sending Lipareli home for the final 3-1 score.
Freshman Lindsey DeLaRosa (3-7) followed up Poetzsch's performance with an outstanding effort of her own, yielding just three hits and one unearned run while striking out five. Lipareli went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Milito was 1-for-1 with two runs scored.
The sweep was Stony Brook's first since April 22, 1999, when the Seawolves posted wins over Bridgeport while the program competed at the Division II level.
Stony Brook returns to action on Thursday, April 12, when the Seawolves travel to face Iona in a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m.
