Chaz Carr's layup with 42 seconds remaining gave Boston University at 64-60 lead and the Terriers held off the Seawolves on a last second shot to earn a 64-62 win over Stony Brook Thursday night at the SBU Sports Complex.
With BU up 64-60, Mike Konopka hit a jumper to pull SB within two with 42 ticks on the clock. A miss by Carr at the other end set the stage for a dramatic finish. The Seawolves called timeout and after two successive fouls by BU, the Seawolves had the ball under the Terrier basket with 1.5 seconds remaining. Patrick Spitler hit Joakim Eriksson who came open under the basket but Eriksson dropped the ball and was unable to convert the layup as time expired. The win improved BU's record to 18-9, 12-3 in conference play while Stony Brook falls to 5-21, 4-11 in conference action.
Stony Brook controlled the first half, limiting the Terriers to only 38 percent from the field as they built a eight-point halftime lead. Konopka scored 10 of his team-high 16 points in the first stanza while JonPaul Kobryn pitched in with eight points. Kobryn netted four points in SB's 10-5 run that closed the half to send the Seawolves into the half with a 33-25 lead.
The Terriers slowly chipped away in the second half and took the lead for good at 58-56 on a three-pointer by Paul Seymour with 3:56 remaining. SB cut the lead to two on three occasions before falling in the waning seconds.
Jason Grochowalski led the Terriers with 13 points and was one of four players who finished in double figures. Chaz Carr (11), Rashad Bell (10) and Billy Collins (10) also reached double digits. Collins also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.
D.J. Munir totaled 15 points and eight assists for Stony Brook, the third straight game in which he has recorded seven or more assists.
Stony Brook is back in action when it wraps up the regular season at Albany on Sunday. Tip-off is 1:00 p.m.
