Stony Brook University baseball players Dwayne Whitaker, Garrett Renner and Andrew Larsen earned Basbeball America magazine preseason honors in their preseason issue. Larsen was chosen as the America East Newcomer of the Year while both Whitaker and Renner were selected to the preseason All-Conference Team.
A graduate of Valley Stream High School, Larsen was selected a Northeast Region All-American, All-State and was the Nassau County Diamond Award Winner as the player of the year during his senior season. He hit nine homeruns and collected 35 RBI with 14 stolen bases as a senior. He hit .575 wih 10 homeruns and 46 RBI, stole 15 bases and posted a slugging percentage of .990 as a junior.
Whitaker - a senior - played in 41 games last year, starting in 35 as the team's left fielder. He hit .358 - third best on the team with four homeruns and 30 RBI and also had five doubles and a team-high three triples. Whitaker was one of six Seawolves selectd to the All-NYSBC team a season ago.
Renner - also a senior - assumed the starting shortstop position 16 games into the 2001 season, starting in the team's final 35 games. An All-NYSBC second team selection, he played in 48 games and started in 36. Renner led the team in batting average at .385, collecting 10 doubles, two triples, one homerun and 30 RBI.
The Seawolves open the season February 28 at Towson.
