Towson, MD -- -
Freshman Andrew Larsen hit a two-run homerun in just his second collegiate at-bat, but Towson (3-0) erased a 3-1 deficit to beat Stony Brook (0-1), 4-3, Thursday afternoon in the 2002 season opener.
Larsen's two-run shot gave Stony Brook a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. Two batters later, Dwayne Whitaker hit a homerun with no one on to pad the lead at 3-1.
Towson answered in the sixth inning by pushing two runs across thanks to a Scott Bacon homerun off starter Anthony Stutz with a man on and no one out to tie the score.
The Tigers got the leadoff man aboard in the seventh in freshman Shane Justis. He advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt with just one out. Justis came home on Gregg Davies' sacrifice fly for the game-winning run.
Stony Brook was hurt by leaving nine men on base - including the bases loaded in the first inning with no one out. In the ninth, Stony Brook had runners at second and third with one out but could not bring in a run.
The Seawolves did get strong pitching performances from Stutz and freshman Jamie Szewjkowski. Stutz went five innings, allowing three runs, four hits, walked three and struck out three. In relief Szewkowski pitched three innings, allowing an unearned run and just one hit.
Rich Graham had a pair of hits for the Seawolves.
Stony Brook heads to North Carolina for a four-game series with Campbell University Friday and Saturday.
