The Stony Brook softball team (2-4) had a tough first day at the VIrginia Tech Hokies Classic on Friday, falling to Canisius, 5-1, and the host Hokies, 4-0.
Canisius (7-5) opened up a 5-0 lead after five innings. An RBI single in the second gave the Golden Griffins a 1-0 edge, but it was the third inning that Canisius blew the game open. Three Seawolves errors and two runs on two hits for the Golden Griffins put SBU down 4-0. A homerun over the left field fence in the fifth inning extended the lead to 5-0.
Freshman Kristen Brust finally got the Seawolves on the board in the sixth inning, with her first homerun in a Seawolves uniform. Brust's shot into left field cut the lead to 5-1, but the Seawolves could get no closer.
Sophomore pitcher Lindsey DeLaRosa (0-2) went the distance, giving up two earned runs on nine hits and striking out seven.
Canisius pitcher Genevieve Garcia gave up just four hits in the win.
Virginia Tech (12-7) put up three runs in the first two innings to open up a 3-0 lead over the Seawolves in the Hokies' first game of the day. A homerun in the fifth extended the lead to 4-0.
Stony Brook rallied in the seventh with back-to-back singles by Lindsey DeLaRosa and Amanda Staschuk, but Hokies pitcher Clarisa Crowell shut SBU down to keep the Seawolves from scoring.
Freshman Jane Stein led Stony Brook at the plate with two of the Seawolves' four hits in the game.
Senior Stephanie Poetzsch (2-2) picked up the loss on the mound, giving up nine hits and striking out two.
The Seawolves continue play at the Hokies Classic on Saturday against America East rival Hartford and St. Bonaventure.
