New Britian, Conn. -
The Stony Brook softball team got out to a quick lead and used a seven-run seventh inning to earn a convincing 18-4 victory over Central Connecticut on Tuesday. The win marks the most-lopsided victory for the Seawolves at the Division I level.
Stony Brook (6-7) jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, as freshman Stephanie DiBiase led off the game with her second homerun of the season. Later in the inning, freshman Jane Stein added an RBI double as the Seawolves extended their lead to 2-0. In the third inning, DiBiase scored on a wild pitch and an RBI double by sophomore Amanda Staschuk extended the lead to 5-0. Freshman RBI double added an RBI double in the fourth inning for a 6-0 advantage.
A two-out rally by the Blue Devils (6-23) in the bottom of the fourth inning made a game of it, but the Seawolves quickly recovered. With a 6-3 lead going into the fifth, SBU scored three runs thanks to a CCSU error, a wild pitch and four walks by Blue Devils pitcher Danielle Cyr, who walked a total of 14 Seawolves batters in five innings.
CCSU added a run in the bottom of the inning on a Stony Brook error, but the Seawolves quieted any sort of rally in the final two innings.
Freshman Colleen McCarthy's RBI single in the top of the sixth scored Stein for a 10-4 lead, but it was the seventh inning where Stony Brook really put the game away.
After the first three Seawolves batters got on base with two walks and a hit by pitch, senior Shea Carpenter cranked a grand-slam homerun over the left field fence, her first dinger of the year. Two batters later, Staschuk belted her first homer of the season to extend the lead to 16-4 and the Seawolves went on to win, 18-4.
Staschuk finished with two hits and two RBI, while Stein had a hit, an RBI and three runs scored. DiBiase scored four runs, and Marissa Servello had a double and scored three runs.
Senior Stephanie Poetzsch (5-5) picked up the win on the mound, giving up just four runs on four hits while striking out 10.
The Seawolves were scheduled to play two games against CCSU, but game two was canceled due to rain.
Stony Brook returns to the field tomorrow with a doubleheader at Wagner.
