Lions Take Pair From Seawolves In Baseball

New York, NY -- - Stony Brook first baseman RJ Etzel and Lee Lipschutz each had two RBI, but visiting Stony Brook (8-9) fell to Columbia (10-11) in game one of a doubleheader, 10-7, Saturday afternoon in New York. In game two, Andrew Zielinski went 4-for-5 and Ed Kull hit his fourth homerun of the year, but the Lions scored 10 runs in the third inning and went on to a 22-8 win and a sweep.

The Lions jumped on Seawolves starter Kevin Willi (3-2) with six runs on eight hits, forcing him from the game after five innings of work.

Stony Brook closed to 6-5 in the seventh inning, but the Lions answered with five runs of its own to make it 10-5. Stony Brook got two more runs in the ninth but could not make up the difference.

Stony Brook erased a 5-2 deficit in game two on Ed Kull's two-run homerun that keyed a three-run third inning and tied the game at 5-5. Rich Graham's RBI single in the fourth gave Stony Brook a 7-5 advantage. However, the Lions got to the Seawolves pitching staff for 10 runs in the bottom of the inning to taked command of the ball game at 15-7.

Seawolves starter Anthony Stutz lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs and eight hits while striking out five. Will Brumfield came on in relief and was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs in 1/3 of an inning of work.

Matt Devins and Lee Lipschutz also homered in the game for Stony Brook.

It marked Stony Brook's sixth loss in eight games as they head to CW Post for one game Wednesday before opening America East play against Vermont at home Saturday.
