April 13, 2002

Final Stats

Vestal, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team (14-19, 3-7 AE) split a doubleheader with Binghamton (16-17, 4-6 AE) in America East action today. The Seawolves fell in the opener 2-1 but bounced back in the nightcap with a 1-0 win.

In the first game, Bearcats pitcher Margaret Yerdon broke a 1-1 tie with a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Scoring on the play was sophomore outfielder Leigh Ann Savidge. Yerdon also came through on the mound, going the full seven innings while surrendering one run on three hits while striking out eight batters.

Binghamton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in that first game, courtesy of two Stony Brook miscues in the bottom of the second inning. Yerdon reached on an error and later scored as part of a double steal. The Seawolves, however, bounced back to tie the game in the top of the third inning on a RBI double from freshman outfielder Stephanie DiBiase.

Stephanie Poetzsch (11-10) picked up the loss for Stony Brook, allowing five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

In game two, junior pitcher Mary Karen Wheat had a no-hitter going through 5 2/3 innings. After a runner reached on a throwing error, however, the Seawolves finally broke through on a RBI double from freshman shortstop Colleen McCarthy in the top of the sixth inning. Stony Brook pitcher Lindsay DeLarosa (3-9) went the distance, hurling a four-hit shutout while striking out four batters.

Binghamton and Stony Brook conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow at noon.
