Vestal, N.Y. -
The Binghamton University softball team (18-17, 6-6 AE) used some late-inning heroics to sweep a doubleheader from Stony Brook (14-21, 3-9 AE) in America East action today. The Bearcats won the opener 2-1 in 10 innings before taking the nightcap with a 1-0, seven-inning walk off victory
In the first game, senior pitcher Margaret Yerdon (Lacona, N.Y./ Sandy Creek) broke a 1-1 tie with a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning. Scoring on the play was sophomore outfielder Christine Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./ John Jay). Yerdon also came through on the mound, going 10.0 innings while surrendering one run on five hits while striking out eight batters.
After nine scoreless innings, Stony Brook struck first in the opening game, as freshman infielder Colleen McCarthy singled home a run in the top of the 10th inning. Binghamton, however, deadlocked the score in the bottom of the 10th inning on a RBI single by junior third baseman Jen Richardson (Wellsville, N.Y.). That set the stage for Yerdon's game-winning hit.
In game two, junior pitcher Mary Karen Wheat (Brockport, N.Y.) fired a one-hit shutout, while striking out six batters. The game remained scoreless, however, until the bottom of the seventh inning. It was then that Sweeney singled home sophomore outfielder Leigh Ann Savidge (Binghamton, N.Y./ Seton Catholic) to secure the win for the Bearcats.
Binghamton finishes the weekend having won three out of four games against Stony Brook. The two teams split a pair of games on Saturday.
