April 21, 2002

Final Stats

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team extended its winning streak to six games with its third straight sweep on Sunday, defeating Marist 2-0 and 8-5.

In game one the two teams managed only two hits a piece in the first five innings as neither team scored a run. Stony Brook (20-21) then broke through in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Amanda Staschuk to make the score 1-0. In the seventh, Cass Broadwater added a leadoff homerun, her second of the season, for the final 2-0 margin.

Stephanie Poetzsch (15-11) earned her seventh complete-game shutout of the season, allowing just four hits while striking out 10. With the win, Poetzsch becomes Stony Brook's career wins leader (32), and also set a new school record for most wins in a season with 15.

Colleen McCarthy led the Seawolves at the plate with a 2-for-3 outing.

In game two the Seawolves torched starting pitcher Danielle Blake for five runs in the first inning to jump out to an early lead. Kristen Brust and Amanda Staschuk earned RBI singles and Shea Carpenter's three-run homer gave Stony Brook a 5-0 edge.

The Red Foxes (9-24-1) then rallied for two runs in the third inning, cutting the deficit to 5-2 on an RBI single by Nichole Rawson Bryanne Thitchener, who was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Stony Brook added a run in the top half of the fifth on Jane Stein's RBI single before Marist plated two more runs in the bottom half of the inning on RBI singles from Thitchener and Barbara Leasure to make the score 6-4.

But in the sixth inning, the Seawolves earned some insurance when senior Lisa Notaro hit her first career homerun, a two-run shot that put the Seawolves ahead 8-4.

Poetzsch relieved DeLaRosa in the final two innings and struck out six, allowing just two hits including a solo homerun by Rawson in the bottom of the seventh to provide the final outcome.

Lindsay DeLaRosa (5-10) picked up the win, allowing eight hits and four runs in five innings.

Stephanie DiBiase, Kristen Brust, Jane Stein and Lisa Notaro each garnered a pair of hits in the game, with Brust and Stein collecting an RBI apiece.

The Seawolves return to America East Conference play on Wednesday in a doubleheader at Hartford. First pitch is 3 p.m.
