STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Seawolves put the finishing touches on their weekend sweep of Towson on Sunday as they rode a six-run fifth inning to an 8-3 victory in the series finale.
How It Happened
- Towson started off the day with an unearned run in the top of the first, before growing its lead to two later in the third on a sac fly. The Tigers had several chances to do more damage, but Stony Brook starter Crimson Rice limited them to just the two runs after stranding a total of seven batters in the first three innings, leaving the bases loaded in the third thanks to back-to-back punchouts.
- Stony Brook would tie things up in the bottom of the third on a single swing of the bat from Rachael Brown as she sent one the other way for a two-run homer.
- The Tigers would again threaten in the fourth, only to leave two runners on as Rice got the last two batters to strikeout and groundout. They would add one more run in the fifth retake the lead at 3-2Â after an error prolonged the inning, but just like in the third they would leave the bases loaded as Rice escaped another jam.
- The bottom of the fifth saw 11 Seawolves come to the plate as the Tigers made three errors on top of a wild pitch and a passed ball to keep the inning going. Brown singled in her third run of the day to tie the game at 3-3, before Ashlyn Burgess doubled to left center to make it 5-3. With one out, a dropped third strike allowed Madelyn Stepski to reach first base and Malorie Hill to advance to third. A Naiah Ackerman single would bring home Hill, followed by a walk and a hit by pitch to bring in Stepski. The final run would come on a bases-loaded passed ball that allowed Ackerman to make it 8-3.
- With a five-run lead in tow, Jayci Finch came in to get the final six outs, working a 1-2-3 sixth before working around a lead-off walk in the seventh by striking out the next two batters and getting the final out on a groundball hit right to her.
