Final Stats
Hempstead, NY -
Sophomore pitcher Sam DeLuca worked seven strong
innings on the mound and sophomore first baseman Ryan Cosentino went 2-3 at
the plate with two RBIs and one run scored as Hofstra University ended a
eight-game losing skid with a 6-4 win over Stony Brook University on Tuesday
afternoon at University Field. With the win, the Pride move their record to
10-28, while the Seawolves fall to 18-15. It was Hofstra's first win over
Stony Brook since March 20, 1999, a string of six games.
Hofstra got on the board first as Stony Brook sophomore starting pitcher
Dave Mischo had control problems, hitting one batter and walking four others
leading to two Pride runs. Mischo only lasted two-thirds of an inning, as
he was relieved by freshman pitcher Ray Zimmerman with two outs in the
first. Senior designated hitter Adam Russ picked up one of the RBI in the
first inning on a walk and junior right fielder Jeff Alwine picked up the
other when he was hit by a pitch. The Seawolves quickly tied the game up in
the top of the second as senior first baseman RJ Etzel singled to center,
driving in junior third baseman Rob Sandora, and junior catcher Ed Kull
scored on junior second baseman Rich Graham's fielder's choice later in the
inning.
The Pride took the lead for good in the bottom of the second when sophomore
shortstop Brian Ariss doubled to lead off the inning and then scored on an
error by second baseman Graham. Cosentino drove in the other run of the
inning with a sacrifice fly with one out that scored junior second baseman
Will Palmer. Hofstra tacked on two insurance runs in the fourth as
Cosentino drove in his second run of the game with a double to center,
scoring senior centerfielder Eric Creaney from second base. Freshman
leftfielder Mackie Root scored the other run of the inning on a fielder's
choice by senior third baseman Brian Hillmann.
DeLuca allowed seven hits and four runs (three earned) in his seven innings
of work, while also walking three and striking out three. Junior pitcher Ed
Reina worked the final two innings of the contest and picked up his first
career save, allowing only one hit and striking out a batter. Root led the
way for the Pride at the plate with three hits, including two infield
singles, and two runs scored.
For the Seawolves, eight different players had one hit and Whitaker added a
run scored and an RBI to his double in the seventh inning.
The Pride return to action tomorrow when they host Long Island University *
Brooklyn, first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
