HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Junior first baseman Amanda Hallaway hit an RBI single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Hofstra Softball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Stony Brook 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Hofstra Softball Stadium. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to rain.
Hofstra (21-25) trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning under rainy conditions, but junior center fielder Heather Brousseau led off with a bunt single to start the game-winning rally. Junior shortstop Danielle Stewart bunted Brousseau over to second, and sophomore catcher Meaghan Almon drew a walk to put runners on first and second.
Brousseau then came all the way around to score from second base on a wild pitch from Stony Brook starter Stephanie Poetzsch (16-15), while Almon advanced to third base. Hallaway then followed with a line drive single to left to break the tie and give the Pride the victory, its seventh straight and 11th in its last 12 games.
Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when junior second baseman Jessica Luna drew a bases-loaded walk off of Poetzsch for an unearned run. Hofstra starter Sara DeAngelis (9-18) had a no-hitter going through 4.2 innings, but finally had it broken up by freshman second baseman Marissa Servello, who singled to left with two outs in the fifth.
Stony Brook then had their bats awaken in the sixth with four straight hits to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman right fielder Stephanie DiBiase started the rally with a single, and freshman shortstop Colleen McCarthy followed with a single as well to put runners on first and second. Freshman first baseman Kristen Brust then followed with an RBI single to right-center field, but was thrown out trying to advance to second on the relay throw. Senior designated player Shea Carpenter then doubled to the wall in right-center to score McCarthy with the go-ahead run.
DeAngelis allowed six hits, while striking out four and walking none to pick up her fourth straight win in the circle. Poetzsch struck out four and walked three for the Seawolves in a losing effort.
