Eight-Run Fourth Inning Sends Seawolves To Fourth Straight Win

Stony Brook, NY -- - Corey Johnson, Stu Juarez and Matt Devins each had three RBI as Stony Brook scored eight runs in the fourth inning and went on to a 13-3 win over New York Tech Wednesday afternoon at Seawolves Field. The Seawolves (22-15) swept the season series from the Bears (25-16), 3-0, and won for the 13th time in their last 17 games.

Down 1-0 in the fourth, Stony Brook rallied for eight runs - all with two outs. Ed Kull's single to centerfield broke the seal and brought home Matt Devins to tie the game at 1-1. Juarez followed with a two-run double and Rich Graham had an RBI double to give Stony Brook a 4-1 advantage. That chased NY Tech reliever Christian Diaz (0-1) from the game after pitching 2/3 of an inning. Diaz was tagged with the loss, giving up six earned runs on three hits.

Kyle Patten was greeted by Dwayne Whitaker with a single to centerfield that scored another two runs and freshman shortstop Matt Devins followed with a towering homerun down the right field line - his fifth of the season - giving Stony Brook an 8-1 cushion.

The Seawolves added one in the sixth on a solo homerun by Johnson - the first of his Stony Brook career.

In the seventh, the Seawolves got four more on a Juarez RBI single, a two-run single by Johnson and an RBI single by Devins. Juarez, Johnson and Devins each had two hits, two runs scored and three RBI.

New York Tech took a 1-0 lead in the first as Brian Goelz doubled to lead off the game and came home on a throwing error by Rob Sandora. Goelz scored again in the fifth when he reached on an error by second baseman Rich Graham and scored on Mike Gaffney's double. Brian Goldberg scored in the eighth on an RBI single by Kevin Perrucci.

With his 2-for-4 performance, Devins now leads the Seawolves in hitting with a .302 average.

Jamie Szwejkowski (4-2) went five innings to get the win, allowing two unearned runs and four hits while striking out one. Stony Brook got an outstanding relief performance from Matt Blumberg, who went three innings, allowing just five hits and one run.

Stony Brook will head to Northeastern for a pivotal America East four-game set Saturday and Sunday.
