ORONO, Maine - Sophomore righthander Mike Collar (Scarborough, Maine) made
his way into the Black Bear record books with his pitching performance
Friday night, leading the University of Maine to a 3-2 win over Stony Brook
in America East baseball action at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine.
Collar went the distance against Stony Brook, scattering five hits and
fanning eight Seawolf batters, to improve his record to 7-2 on the season.
Only one of the two runs he allowed were earned, but Collar did issue a
career high seven walks on the
night.
The complete game victory was the seventh in a row for Collar, tying the
UMaine consecutive complete games record. Collar shares the mark with former
Black Bear great Bill Swift, who accomplished the feat in 1984.
UMaine (33-12, 13-4) took advantage of one of Stony Brook's two miscues on
the night to score the go-ahead run in the fifth inning.
Mike Ferriggi (Bellmore, N.Y.) scored the game-winning run from second base
with two outs in the fifth, when Stony Brook shortstop Matt Devins made a
wild throw to first on Mike Livulpi's (Holmes, N.Y.) infield single.
Ferriggi reached on a one-out single earlier in the inning, and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Aaron Young (Augusta, Maine).
Stony Brook (23-20, 8-9) threatened the UMaine lead in the seventh, after
Devins and Rob Sandora both reached on fielding errors to open the inning.
Lee Lipschutz put the runnners in motion with a single to left field, but
UMaine left fielder Mike Ross' (Foxboro, Mass.) throw to catcher Alain
Picard (Ste.-Foy, Quebec) was right on target and Devins was out in a
collision at home plate. Picard
then threw to Brett Ouellette (Keene, N.H.) at second, catching Sandora off
the bag. Ouellette and Ferriggi caught Sandora in a run-down between second
and third, with Ferriggi eventually getting the putout for the second out of
the inning.
Collar then struck out Stony Brook catcher Ed Kull to end the inning and
seal the victory.
UMaine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, with Ouellette and
Pat Tobin (Pickering, Ontario) scoring on Aaron Young's (Augusta, Maine)
single up the middle.
The Seawolves responded in the fourth with a pair of runs on Sandora's
two-run double down the right field line.
Stony Brook starter Kevin Willi turned in a fine performance, holding the
Black Bears to just three hits and striking out five while issuing just
three walks. Willi went the distance in the loss, dropping his record to
3-6.
UMaine and Stony Brook will continue their America East series on Saturday,
May 11, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Mahaney Diamond.
