ORONO, Maine - Outstanding pitching was the order of the day as the University of Maine and Stony Brook University split their America East baseball doubleheader, Saturday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine.
UMaine won the first game, 1-0, while the Seawolves rebounded to carry a 3-1 victory out of game two.
In the first game, Black Bear starter Mike MacDonald struck out four in a two-hit complete game victory over Stony Brook. MacDonald, who was pitching a no-hitter until it was broken up on a bad-hop single to open the fifth inning,
improved to 5-2 with the win.
The Black Bears picked up the game's only run in the fourth inning, when Mark Reichley reached on an error by Stony Brook shortstop Matt Devins, then came home on Aaron Young's double to center field.
Stony Brook starter Jamie Szwejkowski allowed the unearned run, and scattered seven hits while fanning three Black Bears in his five innings of work. Szwejkowski fell to 4-3 with the loss.
In game two, Lee Lipschutz plated the game-tying and game-winning runs in the fourth inning with a two-run single through the left side, scoring Devins and Matt Taormina.
The Seawolves added an insurance run in the seventh, when Rich Graham singled home Dwayne Whitaker from second base.
UMaine jumped out to an early lead in the game, plating one run in the third inning. Joe Drapeau belted a double to left field to open the inning, then scored on Pete Saunders' fly ball to right field and a
subsequent throwing error by Stony Brook right fielder Lipschutz.
Pitching again dominated the contest, as Seawolf starter Jon Lewis allowed just one run on three hits while striking out five Black Bears to earn the win and improve to 7-3.
UMaine starter Rich Laganiere allowed just two hits in 3.1 innings of work, and was lifted in the fourth in favor of Greg Creek in the fourth inning. Creek allowed just one run on two hits the rest of the way, in
his first America East appearance.
The Black Bears are now 34-12 overall, 14-5 in America East, while the Seawolves are 24-21, 9-10 in league play.
The two teams will conclude their four-game league series with a single game on Sunday, May 12, at 11 a.m.
