May 16, 2002

Final Stats

Stony Brook, NY -- - Stony Brook second baseman Rich Graham went 5-for-9 with five RBI as the Seawolves kept their America East playoff hopes alive with a split of Hartford Thursday, winning game one, 13-3, but falling in game two, 6-5.

The Seawolves scored in every inning in game one, building a 4-0 lead after three innings and chased Hartford starter Roy Scott from the game. Lee Lipschutz doubled down the right field line in the first, Graham rapped a two-run double to right center in the second and Ed Kull popped his sixth homerun of the season in the third.

Following a Matt Devins RBI single in the fourth, the Seawolves exploded for seven runs in the fifth, sending 11 batters to the plate. The Seawolves hit five straight doubles in the inning off Kellen Ferris, highlighted by Matt Devins two-run double as Stony Brook built a 12-0 lead. Devins finished the game with three RBI.

In the meantime, freshman starter Jonathan Lewis was rolling through a shutout until the sixth inning when Ryan Waldron cracked a three-run homerun to erase the shutout. Lewis went 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and struck out a career-high 12 batters. He improved to a team-best 8-3 on the season.

In game two, Hartford erased a 3-1 deficit with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Cory Parker had a sacrifice fly in the fourth and in the fifth, Ron Acabbo and Ryan Cuscovitch each collected an RBI double to give the Hawks the lead for good.

The Hawks added insurance in the seventh inning. Matt Denorfia singled to left, forcing Seawolves head coach Matt Senk to pull starter Anthony Stutz. Stutz went 6 2/3 innings, allowing five runs while striking out seven batters.

Hartford got to relief pitcher Kevin Willi in a hurry. Acabbo followed with a single, Cuscovitch with an RBI single and Waldron with an RBI single to make it 6-3. Matt Blumberg got the final out of the inning in relief of Willi.

The Seawolves plated a run in the seventh on Dave Mischo's groundout that scored Ed Kull and inched within one run when Rich Graham's single to left field rolled through Miguel Marichal's legs, allowing Andrew Zielinski to round third and score. But Jarrett Stawarz got Dwayne Whitaker to fly out to left field to end the game.

Stawarz improved to 4-7 with the victory registering his third complete game of the season. He allowed 10 hits, five runs, three earned, walked five and struck out two.

Cuscovitch went 4-for-4 in the game with three RBI including a solo homerun in the sevond and a double.

The Seawolves and Hawks meet Saturday in a season finale doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
