Brian Hillman went 5-for-6 with four RBI and Hofstra (11-34) won a wild affair at Seawolves Field Tuesday afternoon in game that lasted almost four hours. With the win, the Pride took a sweep of the two-game season series and won for just the second time in their last 14 games, with both victories coming against Stony Brook (23-19).
Stony Brook erased a 15-11 ninth inning lead with a four-run ninth. Relief pitcher Adam Docar hit the first three batters he faced in the ninth and walked Rob Sandora. With one out, Lee Lipschutz singled to left field scoring two more runs and Sandora came home to tie the game at 15-15 on Andrew Larsen's fielder's choice.
The Seawolves had a chance to win it in the ninth with Lipschutz on third and two out, but Matt Devins popped out to second base to end the threat.
The Pride capitalized on one of four Stony Brook errors in the 10th inning. With two-out, Will Palmer reached on an error by third baseman Sandora and Hofstra had runners at first and second. Jeff Alwine and Hillman followed with singles off losing pitcher Matt Blumberg to put Hofstra ahead at 17-15.
The Seawolves did not go away quietly as Rich Graham was hit by a pitch with one out and Sandora walked. Sam DeLuca replaced Docar on the mound , but Dwayne Whitaker singled to bring home Graham. DeLuca got the save when Lee Lipschutz grounded into a double play to end the game.
It was the second win of the season for Docar (2-9) and the first save for DeLuca.
Hofstra jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Seawolves scored six runs in the bottom of the third and built the lead to 11-7. Hofstra exploded for six runs in the seventh inning, keyed by RBI's by Terrance Moran, Hillman and Palmer to give the Pride a 13-11 advantage.
Brian Ariss extended the lead to 15-11 with a two-run homerun off Willi - his first of the season.
Blumberg suffered the loss, giving up two runs and five hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Whitaker led the Seawolves, going 2-for-4 with three RBI while Stu Juarez, Andrew Zielinski and Blumberg and Lipschutz each had a pair of RBI.
The Seawolves head to Maine Friday night for a four-game weekend set.
