Marty Brunke, Jimmy Jones and John Norton have been added to the Seawolves' football coaching staff, head coach Sam Kornhauser announced.
Brunke, who will coach the wide receivers, comes to Stony Brook after spending the last three seasons as a defensive assistant with the nationally-ranked Stanford Cardinal football program. At Stanford, Brunke worked with the inside and outside linebackers in the Cardinal's 4-3 defense. He assisted the defensive coordinator in all aspects of game preparation, including preparing weekly game plans and organizing game film. During his tenure, the Cardinal led the Pac-10 Conference in rushing defense and finished 17th in the nation en route to the Inaugural Seattle Bowl. In 1999, Stanford captured the Pac-10 title and earned a right to play in the Rose Bowl.
Brunke also assisted with football operations from 1999-2000, managing game day operations, assisting coaches and players with the media and coordinating team security and advance travel plans.
Prior to SU, Brunke was the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator at Calmont High School in Belmont, Calif. from 1996-98. There, he led and coached a west coast offense while handling the positions of quarterback, wide receivers and defensive backs.
Jones begins his first season as running backs coach this fall. He comes to Stony Brook after one season as the running backs coach at Freeport High School in Freeport, N.Y. He also was an assistant at Dodd Junior High School in Freeport. Last spring, Jones worked as the assistant lacrosse coach at Dodd.
Jones was a four-year letterwinner at Hofstra University from 1995-99. A three-time rookie of the week selection in 1995, he went on to co-captain the Pride in his senior season.
After graduation, Jones attended the training camp of the Toronto Argonauts. In the summer of 2001, he played for the Roanoke Steam of the Arena Football League.
Norton also begins his first season as the secondary coach. Norton comes to Stony Brook after spending one season at Fordham where he guided the outside linebacker and nickelbacks.
Prior to Fordham, Norton was a the defensive backs coach at Iona College from 1998-2000. In addition to his coaching responsibilites at Iona, he also played a major role in recruiting in the New York area.
Norton is a graduate of SUNY-Empire State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Sports Management in December of 2000. He is a member of the New York City Police Department.
