Seawolves Even Record With Win Over Hofstra

March 12, 2003

Box Score

The Stony Brook Seawolves baseball team improved their overall record to 2-2 with their seven-run win over Hofstra (0-7) Wednesday afternoon in Hempstead, N.Y. Second baseman Jim McCurdy went 4-of-6 at the dish and provided the Seawolves with four RBI in the winning effort. That was all the Stony Brook pitching needed as head coach Matt Senk got three solid innings apiece from Will Brumfield and Dave Mischo who combined to only allow one run.

Stony Brook wasted no time in getting started and scored five times in the first two innings to take a 5-1 lead. In the first inning, third baseman Rich Graham led off the contest with a homer to left field. McCurdy then doubled and advanced to third on a ground out. He would later score on a sacrifice fly by Matt Devins.

The Flying Dutchmen would gain a run back in the bottom of the first when J.P. Wechter homered, but the Seawolves quickly erased their progress with a three-run second. Isidro Fortuna started the inning with a double to left and moved to third on a Graham single. McCurdy would then bring them both home with a double and would later score on a sacrifice by Mike Russo.

Hofstra again gained ground in the bottom of the inning when Josh Sterns homer to centerfield and the Duthcmen bats produced three singles, including a run-scoring single by Wechter to close to 5-3.

That would be as close as Hofstra could get as the Seawolves would go on the score six runs in the remaining five innings before the game was called due to darkness. Brumfield tallied the win for Stony Brook after pitching three scoreless innings.

Stony Brook has a big week of action in front of them as they travel to Homestead, Fla. for an eight game tilt against teams from across the nation. The Seawolves first battle the Kansas St. Wildcats on Saturday. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
