The University of Virginia softball team swept a doubleheader from Stony Brook 4-1 and 11-1 Friday in the first day of competition of the Cavalier Classic at The Park.
The Cavaliers received a pair of excellent pitching performances in their wins over Stony Brook. Third-year Joanna Barstad tossed a six-hitter and allowed just one unearned run while improving to 4-4 on the season in UVa's 4-1 victory in game one. She struck out three batters and walked one. In the nightcap, first-year Erin Horn fired a one-hitter in Virginia's 11-1 five-inning victory. Horn gave up one unearned run and struck out five while walking two.
First-year second baseman Sara Larquier had two hits and two RBI to lead Virginia offensively in the first game of the doubleheader against the Seawolves. In the second game, third-year shortstop Heather Field was 3-4 with a RBI and a run scored, while second-year second baseman Lauren Dennis had two hits and drove in three runs. Fourth-year third baseman Ruby Rojas and fourth-year left fielder Johanna Kaiser had two hits and two RBI apiece. Third-year first baseman Hannah Owings had a hit in her only official time at bat and also scored three runs.
The Cavaliers broke the second game open early with five runs in the second inning and three more each in the third and fourth frames.
Stony Brook's Angela Andrews (1-4) took the loss in the first game, while Jessica Paparella (2-3) was the losing pitcher in game two. Hayley Durham had two hits and scored a run in the twinbill for the Seawolves.
The Cavalier Classic continues Saturday, March 15, with Bowling Green and Stony Brook playing a doubleheader at noon. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
