Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team (8-13) opened its 2003 home schedule on a high note, sweeping Sacred Heart in a doubleheader at University Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Seawolves recorded a 3-2 victory in game one and shut out the Pioneers in the nightcap, 5-0.

In the second inning of game one, two Sacred Heart mistakes allowed the Seawolves to take the early lead. SHU pitcher Michele Walker gave up a leadoff walk and then Jane Stein reached second on an error. Marissa Servello followed with an RBI single to left field. Three batters later, Stephanie McCarthy's two-out single sent Stein home for the 2-0 lead.

The Pioneers (5-12) evened things up in the bottom of the inning. After Leslie Konsig walked to open the inning, Walker's deep shot down the left field line scored Konsig. Two batters later, Jen Place's RBI single tied the score at 2-2. But the Seawolves went back ahead in the fifth, when Stephanie DiBiase's sacrifice fly plated pitcher Angela Andrews. The score stood in a 3-2 victory for the Seawolves.

Andrews (4-8) picked up the win on the mound, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Walker (3-8) allowed three runs on four hits while striking out seven in a losing cause.

In game two, Kristen Brust's two-out homerun over the center field fence in the first inning gave the Seawolves the early 1-0 edge. Stony Brook broke the game open with a four-run third inning. Servello's double to right field scored three runs and Stony Brook held on to the lead to earn the shutout victory.

Jessica Paparella (4-5) earned the win on the mound, allowing just four hits and striking out two for the shutout victory. Chrissy DeMott (0-4) went the distance for the Pioneers, allowing five runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

Stony Brook returns to the diamond on Thursday when the Seawolves play host to local rival Hofstra. First pitch is 2 p.m.
