Baseball Slips In The Ninth To Marist

March 27, 2003

The Stony Brook University baseball team (7-8) slipped to the Marist Red Foxes (9-8) by a score of 8-7 Thursday afternoon at University Field. The Seawolves carried a four-run advantage into the top of the ninth, but were done in by a late rally by the Red Foxes.

The Seawolves entered the final inning with a comfortable 7-3 lead, but the advantage was quickly cut to just two runs after Kevin Grauer doubled home Mike Sidoti and Jimmy Board walked home. The Red Foxes would knot the game at seven thanks to a bloop-single to right by Matt Griffiths that scored two more Marist runs. Marist tallied the winning run when Keith Brachold beat out a tapper to short that scored Andy Kiriakedes.

The game started in dramatic fashion with both teams posting two runs in the opening inning. Sidoti put the Red Foxes up 2-0 with his double to right that scored Tim Allen and Keith Brachold. In the bottom half, Stony Brook's Jim McCurdy clocked his second homerun of the year on the first pitch he saw and Garrett Renner double home Matt Devins to even the score at two.

The Seawolves took a 7-2 advantage thanks to a five-run fifth. McCurdy would continue his hot day at the plate with a triple that would score Ed Kull. Devins would then bring home McCurdy after beating out a single to short and Andrew Larsen would add three with one swing of the bat as he ripped a pitch over the left field wall for his second homerun of the year.

James Szwejkowski started the game for the Seawolves and pitched five innings, allowing three hits and only one earned run. Travis Timmons was credited with the win for the Red Foxes and Dave Mischo finished with the loss. Mischo is now 0-2 on the year.

The Seawolves are back in action Tuesday as they travel to Jersey City, N.J. to take on the St. Peter's Peacocks. The game is set for a 3 p.m. start.
