Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook softball team (11-16, 3-1 America East) closed out its four-game swing with Vermont with a split on Monday afternoon at University Field. The Catamounts held off an SBU rally in game one for a 5-4 victory, while the Seawolves bounced back with a 5-0 win in game two.
Vermont (3-9, 1-3) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one after three innings. Heidi Gebo's two-run single in the first inning got the Catamounts going, and Christine Toomey added an RBI single in the second. Megan Long opened the third inning with a homerun over the left center field fence, her second dinger of the series.
Stony Brook rallied in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 4-3. Colleen McCarthy's RBI single plated Marissa Servello for the Seawolves' first run, and Angela Andrews added a two-run single. One inning later, lead-off batter Stephanie DiBiase evened the game as she cranked her fourth homerun of the season.
However, Long struck again in the top of the seventh. Her base hit up the middle scored Ashley Stebbins, and the score stood as Vermont earned the win.
Long finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Stebbins and Gebo each added a pair of hits. DiBiase was an impressive 4-for-4 at the plate for the Seawolves, scoring one run and adding an RBI.
Angie Totaro (2-5) picked up the win on the mound, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out five. Starting pitcher Jessica Paparella (5-7) was credited with the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in her two innings of work. Andrews pitched five innings in relief, holding the Catamounts to one run on four hits.
In game two, the Seawolves broke open a scoreless game with a big third inning. Amanda Cavitt and DiBiase each earned base hits and Laura Bradford added a bunt single to load the bases with one out. With two outs, Kristen Brust reached on an error by the second baseman and DiBiase and Cavitt scored unearned runs. Brust then scored on an error by the catcher and Bradford reached home on a passed ball for a 4-0 Stony Brook lead. Stony Brook added another run in the sixth with Colleen McCarthy's RBI single.
Andrews (6-9) limited the Catamounts to just four hits and fanned seven batters to earn the complete-game shutout. UVM's Kara Massey (1-4) allowed five runs on six hits and had seven strikeouts in a losing effort.
Stony Brook returns to action on Tuesday when the Seawolves host Marist in a non-conference doubleheader at University Field. First pitch is 2 p.m.
