ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine softball team recorded a season sweep of Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon with a pair of wins. The Black Bears earned a 1-0 victory in game one in 12 innings and took the second game 2-0. Maine improves to
15-13 on the season and 4-2 in America East play while Stony Brook falls to 14-22 and 4-6 in conference play.
Lindsay Tibbetts singled to center field in the bottom of the 12th inning and drove home Niki Taylor who had led off the inning with a walk to give Maine the win in the first game. Lauren Dulkis advanced Taylor to second with a sacrifice bunt and she advanced to third when Sara Asadoorian grounded out to second base. Jess Brady was intentionally walked to give the Black Bears runners on the corners
with two outs before Taylor scored the game-winning run.
Jenna Merchant pitched her second consecutive shutout, allowing just four hits over 12 innings. She struck out seven batters en route to her seventh win of the season and she improves to 7-7.
Marissa Servello went 2-for-5 in the game for Stony Brook. Angela Andrews pitched the complete game for the Seawolves and falls to 8-13 on the campaign.
In the second game, the Black Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Dana Grimm, who batted 2-for-3 in the game, singled to left field and advanced to second when Erin Provost reached
on an error. Amanda Stevens, who recorded two hits in the game, drove home Grimm with the first run of the game when she grounded out to second base. Maine added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sarah Bennis led off the inning with a single to second base. Stevens followed with a single and Bennis advanced to second. Bennis scored the second run of the game when Molly McKinney reached on an error.
Bennis pitched the complete game for the Black Bears and improves to 7-5 on the season. She scattered five hits over seven innings while striking out eight. Jessica Paparella pitched the complete game for Stony Brook and falls to
6-9 on the season.
