Final Stats
Hamden, Conn. - Sophomore Sarah Collins led the Quinnipiac softball team to a two-game sweep, 6-2, 3-2 over visiting Stony Brook Wednesday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Athletic Complex. Collins recorded two doubles in the first game and a game-winning homerun in the second. Stephanie DiBiase went five for eight, accounting for all four runs scored for the Seawolves. The Bobcats improve to 22-12 overall with the wins, while Stony Brook drops to 14-24.
Quinnipiac jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning to start the day's action. Ashley Morgan led off with an infield single. A double by Sarah Collins sent her home. Jill Cimminello then singled to score Collins.
The Bobcats added to its advantage in the next inning with a double by Elizabeth Moriarty. Morgan tallied the RBI with a ground out to third.
Stony Brook recorded its sole run of the game in the fifth inning wih three consecutive hits. Stephanie DiBiase and Laura Bradford had back-to-back singles and Kristen Brust hit a two base blow to plate DiBiase.
The Bobcats responded, racking up three more runs in the bottom of that inning. Valeria Muglia and Cimminello recorded singles, while Collins notched her second double of the day.
Receiving the win on the mound for Quinnipiac was freshman Kim Norman (5-3). Norman struck out seven, walked two and scattered eight hits in 6.1 innings. Melissa Reynolds relieved Norman in the seventh to earn her fourth save of the year.
Angela Andrews was tagged with the loss for the Seawolves with two K's, no walks, and also allowing eight hits.
Stony Brook struck first in the second game in the fifth inning. DiBiase led off with a double and was then plated by a single from Kristen Brust.
Quinnipiac evened the score an inning later when Brandi Simon singled to right field. Cimminello, who had walked earlier in the inning, scored on the hit.
A solo home run from DiBiase would reinstate the lead for the Seawolves. Their advantage, however was short-lived as Bobcat Sarah Collins stroked to deep left field, clearing the fence for a two-run homer. Alyssa Mansolf, who went three-for-three in game two, scored on the hit.
Melissa Reynolds improved her record on the mound to 11-2. She struck out two, walked one and gave up no hits for the win.
Jessica Paparella struck out three, walked one and scattered six hits in the loss.
