Hot Bats Lift Softball to Sweep of Fairfield

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team (13-17) hit four homeruns on the afternoon and allowed just one run to sweep a pair of games from Fairfield at University Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Seawolves captured game one, 8-0, and won the nightcap, 4-1.

In the first game, the Seawolves pounded out 11 hits, while starting pitcher Angela Andrews allowed just one hit to the Stags (13-15). With a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, RBI singles from Stephanie DiBase and Hayley Durham, in addition to a sacrifice fly from Marissa Servello that scored Laura Bradford, helped Stony Brook extend the lead to 7-0. DiBiase then cranked a homerun, one of three in the game for Stony Brook, to give the Seawolves the 8-0 victory.

DiBiase was 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring two. Durham was a perfect 3-for-3, including a homerun, with three RBI. Bradford collected a pair of hits while Jane Stein hit her fifth homerun of the season.

Andrews (7-10) enjoyed a stellar performance on the mound, allowing just one hit, no walks and recording five strikeouts to earn the complete-game shutout. Tara Hansen (1-5) was credited with the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits with one strikeout.

The Stags opened up a 1-0 lead in the second game with an RBI single from Laura Sandonato in the first inning. But the Seawolves scored two runs in the third inning, one on a walk with the bases loaded and one on a wild pitch. The Seawolves extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning with a two-run dinger from Kristen Brust, her seventh of the season.

DiBiase and Brust each collected a pair of hits to lead the Seawolves at the plate. Jessica Paparella (6-7) earned the win, allowing one run on five hits to go along with eight strikeouts and just one walk. Mellissa Santos (7-5) allowed four runs on four hits, walked four and fanned 10 in a losing effort.

Stony Brook returns to action this weekend when they travel to face America East Conference opponent Boston University.
