Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team took a pair of games from Hartford in an America East Conference doubleheader at University Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Seawolves shut out the Hawks in game one, 4-0, then battled from a 4-1 deficit to take the nightcap by a score of 8-5.

After three and a half scoreless innings in game one, Stony Brook (17-27, 6-6 America East) got on the board first when Hawks pitcher Caitlin Eichler gave up a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth. An inning later, Kristen Brust smacked her eighth homerun of the year, a two-run shot over the right center field fence. Stephanie DiBiase added an RBI double in the sixth for the 4-0 final.

DiBiase and Marissa Servello each collected two hits in the game to lead Stony Brook at the plate.

Angela Andrews was outstanding on the mound for Stony Brook, allowing only three hits and no walks while striking out four in the complete-game shutout. Eichler (2-11) allowed four runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Hartford (6-19, 5-10) got off to a quick start in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning. Sammie Morrison's sacrifice fly sent Monica Hayes home, and Monica Evrard added an RBI single to score Liz Borawski. The Seawolves countered with a run in the bottom of the inning with Hayley Durham's RBI single.

The Hawks continued to touch up Stony Brook starter Jessica Paparella in the third inning. Borawski cranked a two-run homer over the left field fence before Paparella was lifted for Andrews.

The Seawolves got things going in the bottom of the inning behind the strength of DiBiase and Brust. DiBiase opened the inning with a double to left center field, and two batters later, Brust hit her second dinger of the day to slice the Hartford lead to 4-3. The Hawks extended the lead to 5-3 in the fifth with an RBI double by Evrard, but the Seawolves countered in a big way in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs to take a 7-5 advantage. RBI singles by Marissa Servello and Stephanie McCarthy evened the game at 5-5, and then a costly Hawks error allowed two more runs to cross the plate. DiBiase added a solo homerun in the sixth inning to close out the scoring.

DiBiase finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI, while Brust was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Jane Stein also collected a pair of hits for the Seawolves.

Borawski led Hartford with a 2-for-3 effort, scoring two runs and collecting two RBI, while Evrard was 2-for-2 with two RBI.

Stony Brook's Andrews earned her second win of the day, pitching 4.2 innings in relief. She allowed just one run on four hits, walking two and striking out three to improve to 11-15 on the season. Jamie Graves (4-8) was tagged with the loss, allowing eight runs on nine hits, walking three and striking out four.

The Seawolves return to action tomorrow in a twinbill with non-conference foe Manhattan. First pitch is 3 p.m.
