Seawolves Swing Past Seahawks

April 24, 2003

The Stony Brook baseball team garnered their 20th win of the season Thursday afternoon by tallying a 9-5 win over the Wagner Seahawks (7-28) thanks to hot bats from Jim McCurdy and Cole Cicatelli. McCurdy slammed his fifth homerun of the year in the bottom of the first to put the Seawolves in front to stay and Cicatelli also knocked his fifth of the season to help The Brook stay in front and improve to 20-11 overall.

Stony Brook started off hot and scored four runs in the bottom of the first after Garrett Renner reached base when he was hit by a pitch. Matt Devins and Mike Russo each drew walks to load the bases and set the stage for McCurdy. McCurdy did not disappoint and deposited his fifth round-tripper of the season over the left field wall. The Seawolves would go on to take a 6-0 advantage in the bottom of the second when Devins doubled to left, scoring David Wood and Renner who both reached base after being hit by pitches.

The Seahawks got three back in the top of the third when Chris Dick pulled a ball over the fence that scored Brenan Gordon, who started the Wagner rally with a double to left, and Nick Papa who reached on a walk.

The Seawolves stopped the run by totalling three runs over the next four innings thanks to a Wood single that brought home McCurdy in the third and a Kevin Solano RBI single to left that brought home Wood in the bottom of the sixth. Cicatelli would ice the victory and make the score 9-3 when he yanked a homer over the left field wall in the bottom of the seventh.

Wagner would get two back in the eighth when Joe Agnello walked and then later scored on an error. The final run of the afternoon crossed when Jon Polonitza scored on a fielders choice in the top of the ninth.

Starter Paul Carufe pitched seven strong innings for the Seawolves, striking out nine of the 32 batters he faced and giving up only three earned runs. Joseph Gorgoglione took the loss for Wagner, pitching 6.1 innings, striking out five and allowing nine runs.

The Seawolves are back on the mound tomorrow as they host New York Tech at 3:00 p.m.
