Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team earned its second straight sweep with two victories over Manhattan College at University Field Thursday afternoon. The Seawolves won game one, 2-1, in 11 innings, then captured the nightcap by a score of 5-1.

Two solo homeruns in game one proved to be the difference as the Seawolves outlasted Manhattan in a three-hour, 11 innings contest. Stony Brook (19-27) took the early lead with Jane Stein's blast over the left field fence in the second inning. The Seawolves clung to the 1-0 lead until the top of the seventh inning, when Erika Kostik's RBI single evened the game at one apiece. Stony Brook's Angela Andrews relieved starter Jessica Paparella on the mound and shut down the Jaspers the rest of the way. Kristen Brust smacked her 10th homerun of the season in the bottom of the 11th to give Stony Brook the 2-1 victory.

Stephanie DiBiase collected two hits to lead the Seawolves at the plate. Coleen Horgan went 3-for-5 to lead the Jaspers.

Andrews earned the win on the mound, allowing just three hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Paparella pitched 6.0 innings, allowing one run on six hits, walking none and striking out five.

Manhattan's Jillian Medea (0-6) was tagged with the loss, allowing one run on four hits, with no walks and four strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.

In game two, the Seawolves broke open a scoreless game with a five-run fifth inning. Amanda Cavitt's RBI single scored Jane Stein, then Stephanie McCarthy scored later on an error. Brust's hot bat then struck again, as her two-run double extended the lead to 4-0. Laura Bradford scored on a deadball on the play to give Stony Brook a 5-0 advantage.

Suzane Masotto's RBI double got the Jaspers on the board in the sixth, but that was all Manhattan could muster.

Andrews (13-15) earned her second win of the day, allowing only one run on three hits, walking one and striking out four. Coleen Horgan (3-5) was credited with the loss, giving up five runs on six hits, walking four and striking out two.

Manhattan falls to 7-22 overall on the season with the losses.

Stony Brook returns to action this weekend as the Seawolves take on America East Conference rival Albany in a four-game series.
