Burlington, Vt. -
Vanessa Cox scored five goals to lead Vermont past Stony Brook 12-7 in America East women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves and the Catamounts both finished regular season conference play with a 2-3 record and now await the result of the Binghamton-Albany matchup to see who qualifies for postseason play.
Vermont jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Danielle Werner put SBU on the board at the 23:10 mark of the first half. The Catamounts built their lead to 6-1 before Jill Gridley answered for the vistors to make the score 6-2 at the break.
Stony Brook got as close as 9-5 in the second half after a goal by Marissa Trachtenberg at 15:56 but the hosts would score the next two goals and hold on for the 12-7 win.
Trachtenberg paced the Stony Brook attack with a pair of goals and an assist. Werner finished with two goals and Joanna Katz added a goal and an assist.
The loss dropped Stony Brook to 7-9 overall and 2-3 in conference play which pulled them into a tie with Vermont (4-9, 2-3). Should Albany defeat Binghamton today (game started at 1:00pm), that would mean that Albany, Stony Brook and Vermont would all be tied for the final two playoff seeds.
America East personnel would then break the tie by drawing the names of two of the three teams out of a hat. The drawing would take place sometime after the conclusion of the Albany-Binghamton game.
The winner of today's other game, Boston University and New Hampshire, will be the top seed and the tournament host Thursday and Saturday.
