TOKYO, JAPAN — Former Seawolves Ally Kennedy, representing Team USA, and Kameron Halsall, representing Team Canada, faced off in the World Lacrosse Women's Championship in Tokyo, Japan, with the United States ultimately claiming the gold medal with a 16-4 victory over Canada in the championship game.
With the win, the United States captured its fifth consecutive women's championship, dating back to 2013, and extended its winning streak to 36 games. Team USA finished the championship with a perfect 6-0 record.
The United States opened pool play with wins over Ireland, Haudenosaunee and Chinese Taipei. In the quarterfinals, the Americans dominated Puerto Rico, earning a 23-4 victory before defeating Israel, 19-7, in the semifinals.
Kennedy, a midfielder, was named the Most Valuable Player of the championship and earned a spot on the World Team. She finished the tournament with 10 goals and six assists.
Halsall and Team Canada finished the tournament with a 5-1 record, earning a silver medal for the fourth consecutive championship.
In pool play, Canada faced Germany, Australia and Wales before earning a quarterfinal victory over Japan. The Canadians then defeated Haudenosaunee in the semifinals to advance to the championship game.
Halsall made an impact in goal throughout the tournament, recording 12 saves, one caused turnover and two ground balls.
