Final Stats
Stony Brook, N.Y. -
The Stony Brook softball team (14-18, 4-2 America East) earned a split with Boston University in a doubleheader at University Field on Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves won game one, 1-0, but BU was victorious in game two, 7-2.
The first game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Kristen Brust doubled to left field and Hayley Durham followed with a base hit. Two batters later, with runners at second and third and two outs, Jane Stein came through with an RBI single to right field that scored Brust for the 1-0 lead. Seawolves pitcher Angela Andrews (8-11) allowed just two hits the rest of the way as the score would stand.
Andrews allowed just six hits and one walk and struck out nine batters to earn the win. BU's Julie Henneke (4-5) allowed one run on four hits, one walk and also had nine strikeouts.
Game two was a different story as the Terriers (10-16, 1-1) got their bats going early. RBI singles from Erin McDonald and Jennifer Shields gave the Terriers a 2-0 lead at the bottom of the first. Stony Brook cut the lead to 2-1 in the third with an RBI single from Stephanie DiBiase, but BU answered with an RBI single from Kristin Knesek in the bottom of the fourth to stretch the lead to 3-1.
However, it was the fifth inning where the Terriers did most of their damage. Abbey Pauley opened the inning with a double and Henneke followed with one of her own to plate Pauley. Three batters later, Tiffany Finateri hit a two-run single off reliever Jessica Paparella for a 6-1 Terriers lead. Knesek followed with another RBI single later in the inning as BU pulled away, 7-1. Stony Brook attempted to rally with one out in the seventh, when Colleen McCarthy reached home on a fielder's choice by Andrews. But Stephanie McCarthy was out at second on the play and DiBiase then struck out to end the game.
The Terriers pounded out 13 hits on the day compared to just three for the Seawolves. Henneke finished 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while Knesek was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI. Finateri collected two hits and two RBI.
Andrews was credited with the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Paparella pitched two innings in relief, giving up two runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
BU's Erin McDonald (3-6) went the distance to earn the win, allowing just three hits with five walks and two strikeouts.
The teams were scheduled to play another doubleheader tomorrow afternoon, but an unfavorable weather forecast has caused the games to be cancelled. Stony Brook returns to action on Wednesday when the Seawolves travel to take on Hartford.
