The Stony Brook Seawolves scored a split with America East conference foe Northeastern Saturday afternoon at University Field in Stony Brook, N.Y. The Seawolves (24-14, 10-4) rode the arm of pitcher Jon Lewis in the first game to a 5-1 victory in which Lewis fanned 11 Huskies (14-18, 7-8), but the Northeastern bats would explode in the afternoon tilt, scoring 13 hits on their way to a 14-1 win.
Mike Russo got things started for Stony Brook in game one when he scored Matt Devins with a single to left to give the Seawolves an early 1-0 lead. The Huskies responded with a run of their own in the top of the third when Lewis walked Matt Morizio and Chris Emanuele to start the inning. Morizio would later score off of a Paul Koslowski single, tying the game 1-1. The tie would soon shift as again the duo of Russo and Devins teamed up to give Stony Brook a one-run advantage. Devins reached first after beating out a bunt down the third base line. Russo would bring him home with a double down the left field line for the 2-1 advantage.
The Seawolves would insure the game in the bottom of the fifth. Cole Cicatelli advanced to second after an error by the Northeastern second baseman. Russo was then intentionally walked which alowed Ed Kull to clear the bases with a double to right and would later score himself thanks to a David Wood double to right. Kull finished the game 1-of-3 with two RBI and Russo tallied two hits and two RBI.
Lewis eaned the win, pitching all seven innings, striking out 11 and allowing just one run on four Huskie hits. Devin Monds was charged with the loss, pitching six inning, striking out two and allowing all five runs.
Game two featured the Huskie offense. Mike Steinberg started the day with a double off the top of the wall in right and later scored thanks to a Tim Bush sacrifice to left. Northeastern added another in the first thanks to a Arman Sidhu liner to right that brought home Chris Emanuele. The Huskies would blow the game open thanks to an eight-run second. After Stony Brook walked the bases loaded, Tim Bush put Northeastern ahead 6-0 by knocking a grand slam over the left field fence. Two more SBU walks and a Brian Nutting single gave the Huskies a 7-0 lead. The advantage would swell to eight when Matt Morizio scored Arman Sidhu and then nine when Nutting came around after a Seawolf error. The final run would cross the plate when Emanuele was hit by a pitch that fore Morizio across.
The Huskies would go on the score four more times in the following five innings and the lone Seawolf run came in the seventh when two Huskie errors allowed both Russo and Andrew Larsen to get on. Isidro Fortuna brought Russo home with a liner to center.
The Seawolves David Wood received the loss, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing eight runs. Jordan Thomson went the distance for the Huskies, striking out eight and allowing six hits.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
