Seawolves Drop Two Sunday To Northeastern

May 4, 2003

Box Score

The Stony Brook Seawolves suffered a setback Sunday as they dropped two to America East opponent Northeastern (15-18/8-8) by scores of 9-6 and 4-2. The Seawolves (24-16/10-6) were done in by a two-out rally in the top of the fifth that scored eight Huskie runs in game one. Game two's defeat came in the top of the sixth when the Huskies jumped ahead 3-2 thanks to a Matt Morizio single that scored Diego Garcia. Northeastern took the four game series, 3-1.

The Seawolves jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning of game one thanks to the bats of Garrett Renner and Lee Lipschutz. After Mike Russo reached on a bloop single, Jim McCurdy brought him home with a single to center. McCurdy would score to put the Seawolves up 2-0 thanks to a double by Lee Lipschutz and Renner would add two more with a homerun of the scoreboard in right.

The Huskies would respond with eight runs in the top of the fifth. The rally began with a two-bagger by Armen Sidhu who would later score on a single up the middle by Omar Pena. Pena then advanced to second on a blooper by Matt Morizio and both would come home to make it 4-3 when Paul Koslowski double of the right field wall. The Huskies would knot the game at four when Koslowski scored on a Seawolf error and would take control off of a Chris Emanuele single that scored Czarnowski. Northeastern added two more with a Tim Bush homer to left and would add the final run of the rally on a Arman Sidhu single to right.

Matt Devins would try to bring the Seawolves back in the bottom half of the fifth with his two-run homer that scored Renner, but the rally would fall short with the Huskies adding another in the top half on the seventh for the final of 9-6. Devins finished the game 2-of-4 with two RBI and McCurdy was 2-of-3 in the contest with one RBI.

Stony Brook's Dave Mischo received the loss in game one, with starter James Szwejkowski pitching 4.1, striking out five and allowing three on three hits. Justin Hedrisk went the distance for Northeastern, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and striking out seven.

The two teams took a 1-1 tie into the bottom of the fifth when the Seawolves took a 2-1 advantage. Ed Kull knocked a deep fly ball to right that scored Renner who tagged from third. The Stony Brook lead was short lived as the Huskies would score two in the top of the sixth. Sidhu scored Bush, who reached on a error earlier in the inning, to tie the game and moved in front when Morizio floated a ball over the short stop to score Diego Garcia. The Huskies added an insurance run in the seventh to take the game 4-2.

Matt Restivo posted a strong effort, but was charged with the loss. Restivo went 5.1 innings, striking out seven and allowed four hits. Brendan Ryan again went the distance for Northeastern, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out seven.

The Seawolves are back in action Tuesday as they host Hofstra at 3:30 p.m.
