Men's Basketball Downed By Maine 46-41

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's basketball team improved to 8-3 on the season with a 46-41 win over Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears are a perfect 2-0 in America East Conference play, while Stony Brook falls to 3-8 on the season and 0-2 in league action.

It was a defensive battle from the start for the two teams, who were tied at 25 at the half. Maine limited Stony Brook to just four made field goals in the second half on 4-of-20 to earn the 46-41 win.

With the Seawolves leading 35-30, the Black Bears went on a 9-0 run to take a 39-35 lead. In the process, the Maine defense kept Stony Brook scoreless for nearly eight minutes. SB tied the game with 5:43 remaining, but the Black Bears used a layup by Eric Dobson and a pair of free throws by both Mark Flavin and Kevin Reed to earn the victory.

The Black Bears committed a season-low 11 turnovers in the win, and for the 10th time in 11 games they outrebounded their opponent. Maine held a slim 31-30 advantage on boards.

The Seawolves were led by Mike Konopka who had 12 points, while Cori Spencer chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.

Flavin led Maine with 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Dobson chipped in with 12 points and four assists, while Reed scored nine points and pulled down six rebounds.
