The Stony Brook men's basketball team survived a furious second half comeback by Wagner as the Seawolves held on for a 56-55 victory on Thursday night at the Sports Complex. With the win, the Seawolves improved to 5-5, while the Seahawks fell to 1-9 on the year.
Antwan Hardy buried a three pointer and a jumper to give Stony Brook a six point lead with 1:39 to play in the contest. Wagner battled back as McLemore and Mark Porter connected on back-to-back baskets and Sean Munson sank one of two free throws to cut the SB lead to one at 56-55 with 21 seconds on the clock.
After a Seawolf turnover, Porter had a shot blocked by Jon Paul Kobryn before missing another shot with three seconds left. Cori Spencer pulled down the rebound as the Seawolves held on for the win.
The Seawolves led 27-21 at the break, but Wagner came out shooting in the second, opening the half on an 18-4 run to take a seven point lead at 38-31 with 13:48 to play.
SB responded with an 8-0 run fueled by three pointers by Hardy and Bobby Santiago to retake the lead just over 1:30 later.
The visitors regained the lead after a pair of free throws by Matt Vitale and a layup by Porter, but Kobryn followed with back-to-back baskets to give Stony Brook a 45-42 lead, one they would not relinquish, with 8:30 to play.
Hardy led the Seawolves with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, while Kobryn came off the bench to chip in with eight points, all coming in the second half.
Porter led Wagner with 14 points, while Munson chipped in with 12 points and a game-high 11 boards.
The Seawolves are back in action after the new year when they travel to take on Maine January 2 at 1 p.m.
