Stony Brook Baseball Downed 15-8 by Akron

Rock Hill, S.C. - The Akron Zips plated 14 runs in the first three innnings and kept the Stony Brook baseball team at bay the rest of the game on Sunday afternoon, winning 15-8 at the Griffin Pontiac Challenge held in Rock Hill, S.C. The Seawolves stand at 1-2 after their first three games, while Akron improves to 3-1.

Akron jumped out to a quick lead with five first inning runs, but the Seawolves battled back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, capped by a two-run triple by Isidro Fortuna to pull within 5-4 after the opening frame. The Akron bats proved to be too much for the Seawolves pitching staff as the Zips scored three times in the second and opened the game up with six runs in the third inning to take a 14-5 advantage.

Stony Brook scored three runs on four hits in the fifth inning and another run on an RBI double by Fortuna in the sixth, but could draw no closer as Akron held on for the victory.

Fortuna was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and 4 RBI to lead the Seawolves, while Cole Cicatelli webt 3-for-4 with 2 runs batted in. Nick Theoharis continued his hot start to the season, smacking an RBI double as part of a 2-for-4 day at the plate.

Six batters had multi-hit and multi-RBI games for Akron.

The Seawolves are back in action next weekend when they travel to Louisiana-Lafayette for a three game set starting on Friday at 6 p.m.
