(www.unhwildcats.com) - Senior guard Marcus Bullock (Cherry Hill, N.J.) hit a jumper with three seconds to remaining in overtime to lift the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team to a 74-72 win over Stony Brook University on Sunday afternoon. With the win the Wildcats improve to 9-19 overall, 5-13 in America East conference play. Stony Brook drops to 9-18 overall, 5-13 in America East.
Bullock recorded his 1000th point on a layup with 8:26 to play in the first half. The team was led by junior center Ben Sturgill (Hamilton, Ohio) who scored team-high 18 points, including 8-11 from the free throw line. Sophomore guard Shejdie Childs (Wynnewood, Pa.) scored 13 points, including five points in overtime. Junior forward Damione Liddell (Omaha, Neb.) rounded out the top Wildcat scorers with 12 points and seven rebounds.
For Stony Brook, freshman guard Mitchell Beauford scored game-high 22 points for the Seawolves. D.J. Munir added 18 points including 5-5 shooting from the free throw line, while Hendrik Feist scored 11 points on 3-5 shooting from behind the three-point arc.
The teams played even through the opening 10 minutes as the score was knotted at 20. Stony Brook captured a 33-26 lead on a 13-6 run fueled by back-to-back three-pointers by Feist followed by a Munir trifecta. New Hampshire answered with a 6-0 run that included a Childs layup and back-to-back jumpers by Liddell.
Stony Brook started the second half with layups by Mike Popoko and Beauford giving SBU a 37-32 lead at 17:47. UNH answered with a 6-0 run capped off by a Jermaine Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) steal and layup that made it 38-37 with 16:02 to play. Stony Brook gained control capturing a 52-44 lead with 9:20 left to play in the second half. The visitors held a 56-48 lead with 6:44 to play. A Griffin Walker (Coffeyville, Kan.) dunk started an 11-3 run to end the second half for UNH. After the Walker dunk, Liddell netted back-to-back baskets and Childs converted on a three-point play to cut the lead to 57-55 with 2:17 to play in the second half. Munir hit a runner to give the Seawolves a 59-55 lead with 1:02 left. Anderson hit a jumper cutting the lead to 59-57 with 45 seconds remaining. Sturgill and Liddell tied up a pass to Popoko giving UNH the ball with 19.1 left in the half. Childs made a lay up off the dribble with five seconds left forcing overtime.
With the score 62-62, Popoko scored on a layup giving SBU a 64-62 lead with 3:00 to play. Childs drained a three-pointer giving the 'Cats a 65-64 lead. After a UNH stop, Sturgill converted a traditional three-point play giving the Wildcats a 68-64 lead with 2:06 to play. Stony Brook crawled back tying it 68 with 1:29 to go. Liddell hit two free throws that were quickly answered by two Munir free throws. Sturgill and Munir each hit a jumper making the score 72-72 with 24 ticks remaining in overtime. The Wildcats set up a play creating an opening for Bullock who drained a jumper from the left elbow giving UNH a 74-72 lead with 2.8 remaining. Munir fired up a three-pointer that bounced off the rim giving New Hampshire the win in its final home game of the regular season.
UNH outshot the Seawolves 44.4 percent to 43.1 percent and held a 37-36 advantage in rebounding.
