Northeastern used a 28-3 second half run to rally from a 15-point deficit and defeat Stony Brook, 73-61, on Thursday evening at the Indoor Sports Complex. With the loss, the Seawolves fell to 6-14 overall and 3-8 in the America East, while the Huskies improved to 14-8 and 8-3.
Stony Brook took the 18-point advantage, 39-21, 1:28 into the second half and led 45-30 before Northeastern bounced back with a 28-3 run over a span of 10:34 to take a 58-48 lead at the 5:55 mark. Marcus Barnes buried four threes in the spurt, while Jose Juan Barea netted 10 points for NU.
The Seawolves pulled back within seven with 4:45 left on a three-point play by Mitchell Beauford, but it was as close as they could get as the Huskies led by as much as 14 late in the contest.
Stony Brook took a 7-2 lead in the opening minutes, but the visitors quickly came back, using a 15-4 run fueled by three 3-pointers by Barea to make it 17-11 Northeastern at the 10:07 mark.
The Seawolves answered with 13 unanswered points on the front end of a 24-3 run to close the half up 35-20. Beauford netted all nine of his first half points in the spurt to lead SB.
Beauford led the Seawolves with 14 points, while D.J. Munir added 13 points, eight assists, five rebounds and three steals and Mike Konopka chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds.
Barea led NU with a game-high 22 points to go with seven assists and Marcus Barnes contributed 17 points in the win.
The Seawolves return to action on Sunday when they travel to Baltimore, Md., to take on UMBC. Tip off is set for 4:00 p.m.
