The Stony Brook softball team won its sixth consecutive game with a double header sweep of Iona on Sunday afternoon at University Field. The Seawolves took the first game 3-1 and the second 11-4 to move to 9-17 on the season. The Gaels fell to 8-10-1.
In Game 1, Stony Brook broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth when Jane Stein scored on a throwing error and Sarah Hoffman's double down the left field line plated Hayley Durham to give SB a 2-0 lead.
Iona cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the sixth when Alex Sprague led off with a double, moved to third on a ground out and scored on an RBI single by Alicia Lanzieri. The Seawolves added an insurance run in their half of the inning on a solo home run by Kristen Brust to go back up 3-1, and Angela Andrews retired the Gaels in order in the top of the seventh to earn the win.
Andrews picked up her third straight win, allowing one run on five hits in seven innings of work. Alison Higgs (6-4) took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits over six innings.
Durham went 2-for-3 with a run to lead SB at the plate.
In Game 2, the Seawolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run double by Brust. They added three more runs in the second on a two-run double by Rachael Vogl, who later scored on a wild pitch. Laura Bradford's sacrifice fly in the third gave SB a 6-0 advantage.
Iona rallied in the top of the fourth, picking up four runs fueled by a three-run homer to center by Alexis Garbowski to cut the lead to 6-4.
SB answered back in their half of the inning as Stein scored on a fielder's choice and Durham scored on a bases-loaded walk to push the lead back to 8-4. Durham led off the sixth with a solo shot before Bradford smacked a two-run double to make it 11-4 and put the game out of reach.
Andrews (5-12) picked up the win in relief, allowing one run on eight hits over 3.2 innings. Kate Giella (2-6) took the loss after giving up 11 runs, 10 earned, on 11 hits while walking seven in six innings.
Bradford went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run, while Vogl went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Stein added three hits and two runs.
The Seawolves return to action on Tuesday, March 30, when they play host to Wagner beginning at 2:00 p.m.
