Game 1
Game 2
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Shannon Logan drove home the game-winning run in the
opening game, and added a key two-run single that broke open the night
cap as the Fairfield University softball team (18-28 overall) swept a
doubleheader from the University at Stony Brook (20-23 overall).
The first game was a slugfest which included 15 runs scored and 25 base
hits. The Stags scored in every inning with the exception of the second
frame. Stony Brook opened the game with three hits off starter Kate
Roberts. Hayley Durham had the third hit for the Seawolves, an RBI
double for a 1-0 lead.
Fairfield also scored in its first at-bat, plating three runs off RBI
hits from Laura Sandonato, Cagney Ringnalda and Megan Miller. Stony
Brook cut that two-run deficit in half in the top of the second as Laura
Bradford hit an RBI double to score Colleen McCarthy. The Stags made up
for that run in the bottom of the third, regaining their two-run lead
after Cagney Ringnalda hit a solo home run over the left field fence.
Stony Brook tied the score in the fourth inning as Jane Stein hit a
two-run single with two outs to make the score 4-4. The Red and White
battled back with a single run in the bottom of the frame, as Molly
Harris led off with a walk and eventually came home on Tara Hansen's
double to left center field.
The Seawolves put things together in the fifth inning, scoring three
runs. Rachael Vogl had the key hit, a two-run single to center field
which gave the team a 7-4 advantage. The Stags tallied a single run in
both the fifth and sixth innings, as Natalie Visone stroked an RBI
single in the fifth and Harris scored off a wild pitch in the sixth.
After Stony Brook went in order in the top of the seventh, Fairfield
started its half of the inning with a ground out and a fly out. Visone
drew a two-out walk, and came home on Logan's RBI double to deep center
field for an 8-7 win. Hansen earned the win, the third pitcher of the
day, by striking out four and allowing one hit in two innings of relief.
The second game was the exact opposite of the opener, as both teams had
trouble getting base runners. Fairfield finally broke through with a
single run in the fourth inning as Laura Sandonato singled and scored
off Ringnalda's double off the center field fence.
The score remained 1-0 until the sixth inning when Fairfield put the
game out of reach with five runs. The Stags stroked four hits in the
inning, the first of which was a two-run single down the left field line
by Logan to make the score 3-0. Visone added an RBI single, which Molly
Harris followed with a two-run single for a 6-0 lead.
Pitcher Tracy Sylvestre retired the Seawolves in order in the top of the
seventh inning to secure her 10th win of the season, and her second
shutout. The freshman scattered four hits and fanned four batters in
seven innings of work.
