Stony Brook, N.Y. - Colleen McCarthy cracked a grand slam over the left field wall in the fourth inning to lead the Stony Brook softball team to a 4-2 win in Game 2 and earn a split of a double header with Boston University on Saturday afternoon at University Field. The Terriers took the opener 2-1. With the split the Seawolves move to 21-26 overall, 7-4 in the America East, while BU's record stands at 19-26, 7-3.

Trailing 2-0 entering the fourth, Jane Stein opened the frame with a single and, after a Kristen Brust groundout, Hayley Durham walked. Marissa Servello reached base on a controversial error by BU shortstop Jamie Haas, as Terriers head coach Amy Hayes claimed Haas was interfered with by Stein as she ran from second to third base. After several minutes of argument, McCarthy stepped to the plate and cleared the bases with a blast over the wall in left to give the Seawolves a 4-2 lead.

Sarah Hoffman made the runs stand up as she allowed just one hit the rest of the way to pick up the win and even her record at 8-8 on the season. McCarthy was 2-for-3 with four RBI.

Brittany Detwiler suffered her first loss of the season to drop to 5-1 for the Terriers. Erin McDonald led BU at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Terriers took Game 1, 2-1, as starting pitcher Ashlee Freeman dominated the Seawolves, allowing just one run while striking out seven to even her record at 12-12.

BU got on the board with an unearned run in the first inning and took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Chiya Louie. Hayley Durham cut the lead in half in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run, her 11th of the season, but Freeman worked out of a jam with runners on first and second to end the ballgame.

Hoffman led the Seawolves at the plate in the opener, going 3-for-3 with a double.

Stony Brook and BU will play the rubber game of the series tomorrow at noon at University Field.
